Recap of the ASPE 2019 Business Meeting

Submitted by: Amber Snyder, M.S., University of Pittsburgh

Gina Shannon welcomed all to a very productive business meeting. Through the meeting, it was clear that ASPE is staying very busy. This brief overview will highlight key moments from the meeting.

Tonya Thompson, VP of Operations, highlighted and thanked those on the board and recognized those who completed their service, including Grace Gephardt and Jen Owens. Rob MacAulay also rotated off as Chair of the Website and Social Media Committee, but is now back on as our President Elect. Thank you to all who provide service to ASPE through work on the board!

Tonya also highlighted some upcoming urgent bylaw changes on which members will need to vote, with voting ending on August 2. The first change proposed specifically designating one of the two Member Liaisons be from a non-North American country. The second change extended the terms of the VP of Operations and VP of Finance appointments from a 2-year term to a 3-year term. The third year in the post would allow those in the positions to stay on for one year in an advisory capacity.

Valerie Fulmer, President, highlighted a year in review for ASPE. ASPE is focused on building a culture of leadership. This includes the Board of Directors creating accountability. Some focuses include the application of a volunteer service agreement for Committee Membership, transparency of responsibility, creating standard organizational practices, and rolling committee membership.

Valerie also highlighted that ASPE has been given seat at the table in discussions about the Simulationist Code of Ethics. This puts ASPE at the table with international leaders in simulation.

ASPE’s growth and maintenance was discussed. Highlights included celebrating a 2nd year of owning a formal listserve which has allowed dissemination of information, advice, and growth efforts between institutions. Additionally, ASPE has been looking at overhauling policies and procedures, looking at marketing strategy, financial reprioritization, and accountable and initiating an overall growth and business focus. The Standards of Best Practice are also being translated into 3 additional language - an exciting initiative to spread impact internationally. ASPE also recognized a new membership survey in process and the addition of a new award to recognize lifetime achievement in SP methodology. The 2019 priority for ASPE was identified as the establishment of a process for the mobilization of modules.

President Elect Rob MacAulay provided his vision for his term as president. Rob recognized the responsibility of the president-elect to contribute to the direction of ASPE and fulfillment of ASPE’s goals. Rob initiated a call to action for members - ASPE is volunteer based, and less than 10% of the membership participates on a committee. We encourage you to join a committee and support the ongoing work of ASPE. This is a great way to grow professionally, contribute to a growing field of simulation, and become involved in an incredible community which grows you personally and professionally.

A big product undertaken by ASPE this year has been the modules project. Shawn Galin has been identified as the lead for the project, which is now going to be a committee with representation on the Board of Directors. There was also acknowledgement of Howard Gregory and Cory Kresbach for their work getting the modules project started and transitioning it to its own committee. The project is designed to address the ever-growing need for ASPE to provide curriculum on SP Methodology. The mission of the Modules Project is: To guide and evaluate the development of stand-alone courses or modules for presentation on behalf of ASPE. The project conducted a call for curriculum developers in 2018, 10 modules were selected and shortened workshops of the modules were presented at the 2019 ASPE Conference. Members are encouraged to get involved in the modules project to support the conversion of the vision of the modules into reality, and obtain professional development and growth personally and professionally.
