In the Spotlight: Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) Submitted By: Nicole Beringson Full Center Name: NGHS Center for Simulations and Innovation Center Location: Gainesville, GA USA Year Opened: 2006
Center Mission Statement: Our mission is to promote high quality and safe patient care, enhance education, and develop research through excellence in multimodal simulation-based training and experiential learning.
Bragging Points:
- Standardized Patient Program: The Standardized Patient Program is coordinated through the NGHS Center for Simulation and Innovation The program provides high-quality, realistic healthcare training in a safe and controlled learning environment. Standardized Patients (SPs) support healthcare providers in learning the value of connection and empathy in patient care.
- Mobile Simulation Lab: The NGHS Mobile Simulation Program is the first of its kind in Georgia and it brings healthcare education to you. The Mobile Simulation Lab has limitless capabilities for offering simulation and traditional learning events. Two mock patient rooms are available as well as two control rooms and a debriefing area. Simulation scenarios can be recorded and played back to participants for debriefing purposes.
- Community Outreach: The NGHS Center for Simulation and Innovation provides experiential learning to enhance educational experiences to our community. This education provides participants the opportunity to practice skills, develop clinical reasoning abilities, and become confident and competent in caring for a patient in a safe learning environment. Simulated scenarios focus on early recognition of clinical deterioration, airway management, communicating with the interdisciplinary team, patient education, implementation of medical intervention, and introduction to high-risk medications and order sets/protocols. Simulation enhances critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills, therefore, leading to improved patient safety and outcomes.
- Collaboration with local nursing schools to bridge the gap to practice: During the COVID-19 pandemic direct patient care learning experiences were suspended for a large majority of undergraduate nursing programs. As a result of decreased direct patient care learning experiences, undergraduate nursing programs were forced to substitute and create new learning opportunities for nursing students. The NGHS Center for Simulation and Innovation supported local undergraduate nursing programs by providing standardized patient-based simulation training to bridge the theory to practice gap during the COVID-19 pandemic. Simulation provides experiential learning to enhance educational experiences.
