On behalf of the ASPE Board of Directors, we hope this message finds you safe and well. These are unprecedented times and every week seems to bring new challenges. Many of us are being tested daily in our personal and professional lives. Please know you are with us in our thoughts.

We wanted to take this opportunity to give you an update on the status of the ASPE Annual Conference.

Right now the future is very uncertain. While we are all focused on meeting the needs of our learners and providing the best online simulation experiences possible, we are beginning to see the financial effects of COVID-19. Many institutions are implementing cutbacks including salary freezes, furloughs, and policies limiting professional development and travel. More importantly, we do not know the course of this pandemic which means your safety and health cannot be guaranteed at a large gathering such as a conference.

The well-being of our members, attendees, and partners is our top priority. Consequently, we have decided to cancel the 2020 ASPE Annual Conference, June 7–10, in Portland, Oregon, USA.

We appreciate your patience while the ASPE Board of Directors dedicated time to thoughtfully analyze the potential impacts of this cancellation. Given the current data available from national and international health organizations, and in view of the realities at our institutions, we felt this was the only responsible decision. We look forward to returning to Portland, Oregon, for the 2023 ASPE Annual Conference.

ASPE is offering a full refund for your registration which will be processed and returned to your original form of payment within 2–4 weeks. If you made a hotel reservation at the Marriott Portland Downtown Waterfront (1-800-546-9513), we encourage you to cancel 48 hours prior to your scheduled arrival to avoid penalty.

In the meantime, we are exploring the feasibility of hosting a virtual conference experience that will bring together our community to engage, share, and learn from one another. We recognize that the energy, insights, and exchanges we glean from our annual convening are an important component of our community and one we don’t want to wait a year to embrace. Please stay tuned for more information to be shared in late May.

It is important that we hear from you, so we invite you to complete this quick survey to give us your thoughts on a virtual conference.
