Case Summary

Pediatrics is often overlooked in SP testing programs because of the difficulty in standardizing children. However the importance of a good history from the parents can sometimes mean the difference between a cold and a deadly infection such as spinal meningitis. Our pediatric CPX committee member took this case on and we ended up with a very simple and solid case of a mom bringing in her 1-month-old child because she was fussy and had a fever. The case is very straightforward and easy to cast because we have a wide age range (25-40) to work with and we have lots of mom aged women in our pool of SP’s. The mom also does not have to be any shape, size or color. After testing with this case, it was obvious that the students who did not pass, (10 this year) missed the diagnoses because they took such a poor history and they assumed it was a virus. During this Case Webinar I will share with you all the case, checklist, guide to the checklist, how our student population did on the exam, and some of the things I would do differently next time.
