Yours, Mine and Ours
Objective:
Our Standardized Patient (SP) Program conducts thousands of hours of SP activities annually and coordinates those activities with eight different course directors and their respective coordinators. The SP Program acts as the institutional administrator in the planning and execution of all SP activities. Because of the large number of students per class, the number and uniqueness of the course specific SP activities requested, and available staff, it is imperative that the SP Program activities be a collaborative effort with the courses.
Methods:
The poster will illustrate how we have administratively designed SP activity responsibilities as a joint venture between the SP Program and the respective courses. Course responsibilities focus on the students including: scheduling, defining the matrix for the activity, orientation, announcements and proctoring. The SP Program concentrates on recruiting, training, managing and monitoring the SPs. Shared responsibilities include activity planning, facility set-up, data analysis, and post activity debriefing.
Conclusion:
SP Programs are often given the task of planning, preparing, executing and analyzing all aspects of the SP activities. Skillful organization of collaborative responsibilities result in SP activities that run smoothly because the participants each have defined activity roles and expectations before, during and after the activity. Our SP activities are primarily designed so that the courses focus on all student issues while the SP Program concentrates their efforts on matters that relate to the SPs. As the number of SP activities continues to increase, the ability to effectively serve the needs of our institution is possible because of carefully orchestrated collaboration with all those involved. |
