Pre-Conference Workshops

STANDARDIZED PATIENT PROGRAM ESSENTIALS FOR BEGINNERS:

This workshop is intended for those relatively new to the field of SP methodology. It may appeal to anyone interested in learning about the essential components of setting up and running a standardized patient program. Included will be an introduction to Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCEs) and a review of vocabulary/terminology of the SP business.

Objectives:

  • to learn how to attract, screen, recruit and hire SPs
  • to develop a method of "Care and Feeding" of SPs
  • to understand program management, fee schedules and costing out of projects
  • to learn training techniques
  • to develop roles/scripts and feedback skills
  • to learn how to identify useful resources

PRESENTATION SKILLS FOR THE PRESENTER:

This workshop is intended for Standardized Patient Educators who find themselves in front of faculty, students, clients & standardized patients or at local or national meetings and would like to refine their presentation skills.

Objectives:

  • to learn how to address performance anxiety
  • to learn how to present in the perfect "state for presenters"
  • to learn how to strengthen your message and your image
  • to develop the use of body language for maximum effect
  • to learn how to design your presentation so that it creates the best results with everyone in the audience, regardless of how they learn.
  • to learn how to close your presentation

Consistent with the "hands-on" methodology SP Educators use in their daily lives, this workshop will provide opportunities to ‘present to the audience’ with immediate feedback and guidance.

HOW TO MAKE MONEY FOR YOUR PROGRAM:

Many SP Programs have been victims of budget cuts. The budget you get every year doesn’t always have to go in the red. There are sources for money that not everyone knows about. Mary Cantrell from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and a development director from her medical school department will guide the group through an exercise that will enable participants to take home development solutions that they can implement when they return home.

Objectives:

  • to develop a list of potential funding resources within your institution
  • to learn how to conduct a meeting with your development department
  • to learn how to seek out resources such as drug companies, hospital auxiliaries and alumni organizations

A fun workshop with financial rewards.
